A complete guide to figuring out what you might actually want to study, exploring majors beyond their names, and choosing a direction without pretending you have your entire life figured out.
At some point during the college process, someone's going to ask you what you want to major in. Then someone else will ask. Then your grandparents will ask. Then some random adult at a family gathering will ask and immediately follow up with their thoughts on whether that particular field is "practical." Eventually, the Common App gets in on the action too.
And before you know it, you're 16 or 17 years old and feeling like you're supposed to have a fully formed answer for what you want to study for the next four years, what you want to do for the next 40, and presumably where you see yourself retiring.
You do not.
Now, that doesn't mean your intended major isn't important. It is. Having some sense of your academic direction can help you make smarter decisions about your high school classes, extracurriculars, summer plans, and eventually your college list. Once we get into the actual application process, your intended major can also affect how we approach your application strategy and, at some colleges, how difficult it is to get in.
But there's a pretty enormous difference between "this is something I should thoughtfully explore" and "I need to decide what I'm doing with the rest of my life before I finish APUSH."
We're aiming for the first one.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see students have about choosing a major is that they're supposed to experience some magical moment of certainty. One day, apparently, you'll wake up, gaze meaningfully into the distance, and realize:
Ah yes. Behavioral Economics. This is what I was put on Earth to study.
That would certainly make my job easier, but that's usually not how this works.
Some students really do know early. They've been taking things apart since they were six, discovered robotics in middle school, fell in love with physics, and can't imagine studying anything other than Engineering. Great. We've got a direction.
Other students have a general neighborhood but haven't found the exact address yet. Maybe you know you're fascinated by human behavior but aren't sure whether that means Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Cognitive Science, or something you haven't discovered yet. Also great. That gives us plenty to explore.
And then there are students whose current academic plan can best be summarized as ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. You're fine too!
In fact, I'd much rather have you genuinely tell me, "I don't know yet," than arbitrarily declare yourself pre-med because you like science and your parents told you doctors have good job security. Uncertainty gives us something to explore. A completely manufactured answer just sends us exploring in the wrong direction.
And exploration really is the point here. You're going to start collecting clues. Which classes do you actually enjoy, and why do you enjoy them? What are you naturally good at? What kinds of questions make you curious enough to keep Googling long after you've found the answer you technically needed? What problems do you like solving? What subjects have you never had the chance to study in high school? And when something does sound interesting, what happens when you look past the shiny description and investigate what studying it actually involves?
Because that last part matters. Liking the idea of a major and liking the actual major are not always the same thing. We'll get into that.
You also might change your mind. Actually, there's a pretty decent chance you'll change your mind about something. College will introduce you to subjects you've never encountered, career possibilities you didn't know existed, and combinations of interests that would be nearly impossible to predict right now. That's not a failure of planning. That's kind of the point of going to college.
So no, I'm not asking you to figure out exactly what you want to be when you grow up. I'm asking you to figure out what you're curious enough to explore next. That's a much more manageable question. And, conveniently, that's exactly what the rest of this guide is going to help you do.
Before we start figuring out which major might be right for you, we should probably establish what a major actually is. This sounds obvious until you start looking at college websites and encounter majors, minors, concentrations, tracks, certificates, specializations, interdisciplinary programs, secondary fields, and approximately 900 other terms colleges have invented to describe "the stuff you're going to study."
Because apparently we needed options.
At its simplest, your major is your primary field of study in college. It's the subject you'll spend the most time studying and the one that will appear on your degree. If you major in Psychology, for example, you'll complete a required set of Psychology courses along with electives in the field, while also completing whatever general education, distribution, or core curriculum requirements your college has.
But here's where things get more interesting: your major isn't your entire college education. You're not going to arrive on campus, enter the Psychology Department, and emerge four years later having encountered nothing but psychology. At most colleges, only a portion of your total coursework will actually be devoted to your major. The rest might include general education requirements, electives, a minor or certificate, courses you take purely because they sound interesting, and that one class about the history of witchcraft you registered for because it fulfilled a requirement and then became weirdly obsessed with.
Exactly how much freedom you'll have depends enormously on the college. Some universities have extensive core requirements. Others use broader distribution requirements that let you choose among different subjects. A handful have famously flexible or open curricula. And some majors, particularly fields like Engineering, Nursing, Architecture, and certain sciences, can have enough requirements that there's considerably less room for wandering around the course catalog collecting interesting classes like Pokémon.
This is one reason we can't evaluate a major separately from the college offering it. Studying Economics at one university might give you enormous flexibility to explore Public Policy, Data Science, or Philosophy alongside it. At another, the curriculum may be much more prescribed. Eventually, when we're building your college list, we're not just going to ask, "Does this school have my major?" We're going to ask, "What would studying this major at this particular school actually look like?"
Before we get there, though, you'll need to know what you're looking at.
Here's something that surprises a lot of high school students: if you earn a 120-credit bachelor's degree, all 120 of those credits generally aren't going toward your major. Not even close.
A typical bachelor's degree is more like a very academic pie. One chunk goes toward your major. Another goes toward the college's general education, core, or distribution requirements. And whatever's left gives you room for electives, a minor, a certificate, another major, or simply classes you take because they sound interesting.
There's no universal formula, because colleges and degree programs build their curricula differently, but a roughly 120-credit degree might look something like this:

Writing, math, science, humanities, social sciences, language requirements, or whatever collection of courses your particular college has decided every graduate should encounter.
Required introductory courses, advanced courses, electives within the department, and possibly a capstone, thesis, research experience, studio, or internship. Some highly structured majors, especially Engineering, Nursing, Architecture, and other professional programs, can require considerably more.
Minors are usually optional, and these courses may sometimes overlap with other degree requirements depending on the college.
This is your academic wiggle room. You might use it to explore another subject, complete a certificate, study abroad, add a second major, or finally take The History of Witchcraft because you've been eyeing it since freshman orientation.
And because college curricula apparently enjoy making simple diagrams complicated, these categories can overlap. A course might simultaneously fulfill a general education requirement and count toward your major or minor. AP, IB, and dual-enrollment credit may also knock out certain requirements before you ever arrive on campus. Meanwhile, a highly structured degree might leave you with far fewer true electives than a liberal arts major.
So don't get too attached to the exact numbers. The visual is the point: your major is a significant part of your college education, but it usually isn't the whole thing.
Your major is your primary academic field. Biology, English, Economics, Anthropology, Mechanical Engineering, Political Science, Computer Science, Film Studies, and approximately a gazillion other options can all be majors. Within the major, you'll typically have some courses everyone has to take and some room to choose electives based on your particular interests. How much of each you get depends on the program.
And please don't assume that because you recognize the name of a major, you know what studying it entails. High school subjects and college majors are not always the same animal. You may love AP Psychology and be surprised by how much statistics and research methodology show up in a Psychology degree. You may think Political Science means four years of talking about elections and discover political theory, comparative politics, international relations, quantitative methods, and public policy waiting for you.
This is why we're eventually going to look at actual curricula instead of choosing majors based on vibes.
A minor is a secondary area of academic study that requires fewer courses than a major. It can be closely related to your primary field, completely different from it, or strategically chosen to help you connect two interests.
Maybe you major in Political Science and add a minor in Data Science because you're interested in polling and elections. Maybe you major in Computer Science but refuse to abandon your love of music. Maybe you're studying Environmental Science and add Economics because you're fascinated by the financial side of climate policy. Or maybe you minor in French because you love French.
Not every academic decision needs to be part of a 12-point career optimization strategy.
Minors are also optional at many colleges, and not every university offers them. So while they can be a great way to build another interest into your education, I don't want you rejecting an otherwise fantastic college because you've decided at 16 that you absolutely must major in Neuroscience and minor in Creative Writing. There may be six other ways to accomplish exactly what you're hoping to do.
A concentration, track, or specialization generally allows you to focus more deeply on a particular area within your major.
For example, two students might both major in Biology while one focuses heavily on molecular and cellular biology and the other concentrates in ecology and evolution. An Economics major might specialize in financial economics, public policy, or quantitative economics. A Psychology department might offer pathways through cognitive, developmental, social, or clinical psychology.
This is where reading beyond the name of the major starts to become really useful. If you're fascinated by marine ecosystems and one college's Biology department has an entire concentration devoted to marine biology while another offers approximately two relevant courses, "they both have Biology" isn't particularly helpful information.
Also, colleges use all of these words differently because consistency would apparently be too easy. One university's "concentration" may function like another university's "track," while another school may use "concentration" to mean something entirely different.
Don't get too attached to the terminology. Look at what the program actually lets you study.
An undergraduate certificate is generally a smaller, structured collection of courses focused on a particular subject or skill. Depending on the college, you might find certificates in areas like Entrepreneurship, Data Analytics, Public Health, Sustainability, Digital Humanities, or countless other fields.
Certificates can be particularly useful when you're interested in something that complements your major but doesn't necessarily warrant an entire second major or minor. They're also another reason not to judge a college's academic possibilities solely by scrolling through its list of majors.
Sometimes the exact thing you're looking for is hiding somewhere else.
And now we get to one of my favorite categories: the majors that refuse to stay in their lane.
Interdisciplinary majors intentionally combine multiple academic fields to examine questions that don't fit neatly inside one department. Depending on the college, you might encounter programs like Cognitive Science, Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE), Science, Technology & Society, Environmental Studies, Neuroscience, Human-Computer Interaction, Health & Society, or dozens of other combinations.
These programs can be fantastic for students who keep telling me some version of, "Well, I really like X… but I also really like Y."
Good! Maybe we don't have to choose.
A student interested in technology and human behavior might discover Cognitive Science. Someone fascinated by medicine but equally interested in culture and inequality might find Health & Society or Medical Anthropology. A student who loves politics but doesn't want to abandon quantitative work might gravitate toward PPE, Political Economy, or a public policy program with a strong data component.
And sometimes a college will even allow students to design their own interdisciplinary major, which is essentially the academic equivalent of saying, "Fine, I'll do it myself."
The larger point is that your options are much broader than the handful of majors you've probably encountered in high school. You don't need to decide among Biology, Business, Psychology, Engineering, and English simply because those are the fields you already recognize.
Part of exploring majors is discovering what's actually out there.
And trust me, there's a lot out there.
Okay, so now you know what a major is. That's lovely. Unfortunately, this information does absolutely nothing to answer the considerably more pressing question: What on earth should you major in?
If you genuinely have no idea, your first instinct might be to pull up a college's list of majors and start scrolling alphabetically until something jumps out at you. And while I fully support discovering that Archaeology exists, there's a better place to start.
Start with yourself.
Major exploration is basically one giant exercise in collecting clues. You're looking for patterns in what captures your attention, what comes naturally to you, what you're willing to work hard at even when it doesn't come naturally, what kinds of problems you enjoy solving, and what you voluntarily choose to learn about when nobody's assigning it.
And I want to emphasize patterns, because one isolated data point usually isn't enough. Getting an A in Chemistry doesn't automatically mean you should major in Chemistry. Loving your AP Government class doesn't necessarily mean Political Science is your calling. Being the person everyone comes to for advice does not, despite what your friends may tell you, constitute a formal diagnosis that you should become a psychologist.
Instead, start paying attention to the why behind the things you enjoy.
Maybe Biology is your favorite class, but what you actually love is learning how tiny changes at the cellular level can affect an entire organism. That might send us toward Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or Neuroscience.
Maybe you love English, but it isn't necessarily because you want to spend four years analyzing novels. You love figuring out why an author made a particular choice, how language shapes an audience's response, and how people use stories to communicate ideas. Suddenly, we might also be exploring Communications, Linguistics, Journalism, Marketing, Media Studies, or even fields you've never encountered before.
Maybe you keep telling me you "like math," which is wonderful but also approximately as specific as telling me you "like food." What do you like about math? Do you enjoy finding one correct solution to a complicated problem? Working with data? Recognizing patterns? Building models? Applying math to real-world systems? Understanding the theory behind why something works? Those answers can point us in very different directions.
When you're trying to generate possibilities, ask yourself questions like:
If nobody cared whether your future career sounded impressive, what would you want to learn more about?
That question can be very revealing. Because students don't make these decisions in a vacuum. You've probably absorbed ideas about which careers are prestigious, which majors are "useful," which fields make money, which professions your family understands, and which options seem like the kinds of things a Very Successful Person™ would study.
Career outcomes matter, and we're absolutely going to talk about them. But if we introduce salary, prestige, admissions strategy, and your parents' opinions before we've even figured out what you're interested in, they can drown out some really useful information.
For now, we're just gathering clues.
This is also where I want you to remember that your high school course catalog is not the entire academic universe.
Most high schools offer some version of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, History, Government, Economics, Psychology, Computer Science, and maybe a handful of electives. Colleges can offer hundreds of fields and subfields you've never had the opportunity to encounter.
I could keep going.
And sometimes the field that fits you best isn't one you've already taken a class in. It may be sitting at the intersection of two or three things you already know you like.
So if your answer right now is "I have no idea what I want to major in," our goal isn't to force you to pick something from the subjects you recognize. It's to turn "I have no idea" into something more useful:
I know I like understanding why people make the decisions they do.
I'm really interested in health, but I'm much more fascinated by the social and policy side than the clinical side.
I like science and problem-solving, but I don't think I want to work in a lab.
I love writing, research, and politics, but I also really like working with data.
Now we have something to work with.
You don't need a major yet. You need a few promising directions. And once we have those, we can start figuring out whether you actually like the reality of studying them as much as you like the idea. Which, as it turns out, are not always the same thing.
Okay, so you've started collecting clues. Maybe you've realized you're fascinated by human behavior. Maybe you keep coming back to environmental issues. Maybe you've discovered that you really like solving quantitative problems, understanding how systems work, or arguing about public policy with anyone unfortunate enough to sit next to you at dinner.
Excellent. Now we're getting somewhere. But here's where major exploration gets a little trickier: being interested in something isn't necessarily the same thing as wanting to study it.
I see students make this leap all the time.
I love animals, so maybe I'll major in Animal Science. I'm fascinated by true crime, so maybe I'll study Criminal Justice. I love sports, so Sports Management! I've watched every season of Grey's Anatomy, so obviously we're pre-med now.
Not so fast!
Your interests are incredibly useful because they tell us where to start looking, but we still have to figure out what about that interest actually grabs you. A student who tells me they "love animals" could be interested in animal behavior, conservation, veterinary medicine, ecology, genetics, environmental policy, or, frankly, just really love their dog. Those don't all point us toward the same college major.
The same thing happens with careers. If you tell me you want to be a doctor, I want to know why. Is it the science? Solving diagnostic puzzles? Working directly with patients? The relationship between medicine and public health? The opportunity to help people through difficult moments? The fact that everyone in your family has been telling you you're going to be a doctor since you were four?
Those answers matter.
This is why I don't want you stopping at "What am I interested in?" I want you to keep poking at the answer until we understand what about it interests you.
We also need to talk about what you're good at, because interest and aptitude aren't necessarily the same thing.
You can be fascinated by a subject and still find it difficult. You can also be exceptionally good at something you have absolutely no desire to spend four years studying. I was good at plenty of things in school that I had zero intention of turning into a personality. Neither one automatically determines your major.
What we're looking for is some combination of
And importantly, aptitude doesn't mean something has to come effortlessly to you. If you love Physics enough to spend two hours wrestling with one problem until it finally clicks, that tells me something too. Sometimes the subjects that engage us most intellectually are the ones that make us work for it.
On the flip side, I don't want you ignoring the reality of what a field requires simply because you love the idea of it. If you're fascinated by marine life but would happily never take another Chemistry class for as long as you live, we should probably investigate what a Marine Biology curriculum actually requires before you start buying dolphin-themed dorm decor.
Maybe you look at the curriculum and decide the science is worth it because you're that excited about the field. Maybe you discover Environmental Studies or Marine Policy and realize that's what you were actually looking for.
Either way, we've learned something.
This distinction between the idea of a major and the reality of a major is one of the most important things I want you to understand.
Psychology isn't four years of analyzing everyone's childhood.
Political Science isn't four years of debating presidential elections.
Business isn't four years of learning how to become a CEO.
Computer Science isn't just building apps.
And Biology isn't just the parts of AP Bio you happened to enjoy.
"Psychology — I'm fascinated by why people behave the way they do."
Highlighted courses are the ones students are most often surprised to find. This is an illustration of the gap between a major's name and its coursework — not any one college's requirements.
Every academic field has its less glamorous parts. There will be foundational courses, research methods, quantitative requirements, theory, prerequisite sequences, and topics that may have absolutely nothing to do with the thing that originally attracted you to the field.
That's normal. You don't have to be wildly excited about every single course in a major. If that were the standard, approximately nobody would graduate from college.
What we're trying to figure out is whether you're interested enough in the actual discipline to want to spend a significant portion of four years learning how people in that field think, ask questions, conduct research, solve problems, and create knowledge.
And the easiest way to start figuring that out? Go look at the actual major.
Not the two-sentence description on a college admissions page. Not the career infographic you found on Pinterest. Not a TikTok titled TOP 10 COLLEGE MAJORS THAT WILL MAKE YOU RICH BY 25!!!
The actual curriculum.
Because sometimes you pull up the required courses and think: Wait. These sound amazing. That's a very good sign.
And sometimes you get six courses down and think: Oh. That's also extremely useful information.
Either way, we're getting closer.
So you've found a few possibilities that sound interesting. Now comes the part of major exploration that students routinely skip and that I am going to insist you do anyway: Go look at the classes.
Seriously. This is one of the easiest and most useful ways to figure out whether you're actually interested in a major, and yet students will spend three hours researching whether a college has good dining hall food before it occurs to them to investigate what they'd actually be studying there. Priorities.
Start by choosing a few colleges and finding the department's Major Requirements, Degree Requirements, or Curriculum page. Don't worry yet about whether those colleges are actually going to end up on your list. Right now, we're using them as examples so you can see what studying this field might look like.
Then actually read the course requirements.
What introductory classes does everyone have to take? Is there a statistics requirement? Calculus? Research methods? A laboratory sequence? Foreign language? Programming? A senior thesis or capstone? How much freedom do students have to choose electives? What kinds of upper-level courses are available once you get past the introductory work?
This is where majors start becoming a lot more real.
Maybe you've been telling everyone you want to major in Psychology because you're fascinated by why people behave the way they do. Then you pull up a Psychology curriculum and discover statistics, experimental design, research methods, neuroscience, cognition, developmental psychology, and courses where you're actually reading and evaluating psychological research.
You might think, "Wait, that's even cooler than I thought." Excellent.
Or you might think, "There is considerably more science involved here than I thought." Also excellent. We have learned something.
Here's where this exercise gets even more useful: don't look at just one college. Pull up the same major at two or three different schools and compare them.
Because a Biology degree isn't one standardized product that colleges order from the College Major Factory. The same major can look surprisingly different depending on where you study it.
One Biology department might have incredible depth in molecular biology and genetics. Another might be particularly strong in ecology and evolutionary biology. Another could make it easy to specialize in neuroscience. One might have dozens of undergraduate research opportunities built into the department, while another might make research much harder to access until you're an upperclassman.
Even the structure of the degree can be different. One program may require a long sequence of prescribed courses while another gives you considerably more freedom to build your own path through the major.
This is why "Does this college have my major?" is only the beginning of the question.
Eventually, when you're researching colleges, I want you asking: What does studying my major look like here?
Once you've looked at the required courses, go snoop around a little. And yes, "snoop around" is now an official college research methodology.
Look through the department's elective offerings. Read about its concentrations or specializations. See what professors are researching. Look for undergraduate research programs, labs, institutes, centers, fieldwork, internships, study abroad programs, or special academic opportunities connected to the department.
One university may have a particularly strong international relations program, while another may have faculty doing fascinating work in political behavior and elections.
One school might give students access to forests, coastlines, field stations, or environmental research centers that effectively turn the surrounding area into a laboratory.
Don't stop at "they have a business school." What can you actually study inside it? Finance? Marketing? Entrepreneurship? Supply Chain Management? Business Analytics? International Business? Can you combine those interests? Are there experiential consulting projects? Student-run investment funds? Incubators?
This is where you start discovering that the same general academic interest can lead to very different college experiences.
There's also a much less scientific test that I genuinely love. Start opening course descriptions. Then pay attention to what happens.
If you tell yourself you're going to spend ten minutes looking at Anthropology and suddenly you've got 14 tabs open because you found courses on medical anthropology, food and culture, migration, human evolution, archaeology, and the anthropology of social media… I'm taking note.
If you open the Economics catalog, read three descriptions, and immediately start wondering how much longer I expect you to do this exercise… I'm also taking note.
Neither reaction makes the decision for us, but I'm absolutely paying attention to it.
Finally, I don't want you evaluating a program solely by counting how many course titles sound fun. The curriculum tells us what you'll study, but a department can also shape how you'll study it.
Will you spend a lot of time in labs? Writing papers? Conducting fieldwork? Building things? Analyzing data? Critiquing texts? Working collaboratively? Performing? Designing? Doing independent research?
What kinds of questions does the field ask, and do you enjoy the process it uses to answer them? That's ultimately what you're trying to figure out.
You don't need to look at a curriculum and think, I desperately want to take every single one of these classes immediately. There will almost certainly be requirements you're less excited about. That's college. That's also life. I regret to inform you that no major consists exclusively of your favorite things.
But if you look across the required courses, electives, research opportunities, and the kinds of work students actually do and find yourself thinking: "Wait… I want to know more about all of this."
Now that's a clue worth following.
At some point in your major exploration, we have to talk about what happens after college. You know. The part where they hand you a diploma, congratulate you, and then apparently expect you to become a functioning adult with health insurance.
This is also where students tend to make one of two mistakes. Some become so focused on finding their intellectual passion that they barely consider what they might actually do with the degree afterward. Others immediately Google "highest-paying college majors" and start working their way down the list until they find something they think they could tolerate for four years.
I'd like us to land somewhere in the middle.
Career outcomes matter. College is a massive investment of your time, effort, and, in many cases, an alarming amount of money. It's completely reasonable to think about what kinds of careers a major might prepare you for, whether those careers are growing, what entry-level salaries might look like, whether you'll need graduate school, and whether the lifestyle associated with those careers actually appeals to you.
But here's the problem: majors and careers don't line up nearly as neatly as most high school students think they do.
In some fields the connection between what you study and what you do afterward is relatively direct. Earn a degree in Nursing and become licensed, and there's a pretty obvious profession waiting on the other side. Accounting, Engineering, and Architecture have similarly defined trajectories.
Even then, specialties and career changes come up along the way — but if you tell me you're considering Mechanical Engineering, we can make reasonable predictions about where it leads.
Then there are majors like History. A historian? Sure, potentially. But also an attorney, teacher, journalist, policy analyst, researcher, consultant, nonprofit leader, archivist, business executive, or any number of other things.
The same is true for English, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Mathematics, and Economics. The major gives you knowledge and skills; your eventual career depends on what you do with them.
Which is why the better question is usually: "What will I know how to do because I studied this?"
That can feel unsettling when you're 17 and desperately hoping somebody will hand you a flowchart labeled MAJOR → JOB → LIFE, but it can also be incredibly freeing.
So when you're researching a major, don't stop at the list of jobs it supposedly leads to. Look at what it teaches you to do.
Your first job after college probably won't be your last. Your education should prepare you for that first step — and leave you flexible enough to keep taking new ones.
Fair question!
I don't want us swinging so far into "follow your passion!" territory that we pretend practical considerations don't exist. If you're seriously considering a major, research where its graduates actually go. And I know, very rude of adulthood to keep bringing up money — but salary shouldn't be the only factor you use to choose a major, and you shouldn't be completely oblivious to it either.
The trick is refusing to stop at one exciting number on a "highest-paying majors" list.
A field with a lower median salary might be perfectly sustainable depending on where you live, what you paid for college, and what kind of life you want. And if a career you're imagining requires another degree, that's its own conversation — coming up next.
Money matters. Context matters more.
You don't have to rely on the name of your major to make you employable. You can build skills around it — with minors, certificates, internships, research, jobs, projects, and electives.
Instead of asking:
"Which major guarantees me a good career?"
Try asking:
"How can I use college to build the combination of knowledge, skills, and experiences I'll need for the kinds of careers I might want?"
That question gives you a lot more room to work with. And notice the word might.
You don't need to know exactly what job you want at 17 any more than you need to know exactly what you'll major in. But if you're considering spending four years studying something, you should at least be curious about where it could take you.
Explore the subject because you're interested in it. Explore the careers because you want to understand what you could eventually do with it. Then let both pieces of information help you decide what deserves a closer look.
Remember how I said the relationship between major → career can get complicated? Well, for some careers, there's another pretty significant step in the middle: major → graduate or professional school → career. And depending on what you want to do, that path can involve quite a few more years of school before anyone hands you the fancy letters to put after your name.
If you're considering medicine, dentistry, law, physical therapy, clinical psychology, academia, or another profession that requires education beyond a bachelor's degree, it's worth understanding that pathway before you start making assumptions about what you should major in. One of the most common mistakes students make is assuming, I want to be X, so obviously I need to major in X. Sometimes that's true. Sometimes it's very much not.
Pre-med is a path, not a major.
There is no required pre-law major.
Other paths are stricter — some require accredited degrees, licensure, clinical hours, or a specific prerequisite sequence. That's the part worth investigating for the career you have in mind.
Despite the number of high school students who confidently tell me they're planning to "major in pre-med," pre-med usually isn't a major at all. You generally don't have to major in Biology — or Chemistry, or Neuroscience, or any science.
It's a path: the prerequisite coursework, the MCAT, and the experience medical schools expect. Your actual major could be Biology — or Anthropology, English, Economics, or Philosophy — provided you can fit those requirements in and perform well in them.
There are, of course, perfectly reasonable reasons so many pre-med students choose science majors. Major requirements often overlap substantially with medical-school prerequisites, which can make scheduling much easier. And, minor detail, you should probably actually enjoy science if you're planning to spend your career practicing medicine. But that's different from choosing Biology because you think medical schools require it.
They don't.
The same idea applies to law school, so you don't need to frantically search college websites for a Pre-Law major and eliminate the schools that don't offer one.
Students enter law school from Political Science, History, Philosophy, Economics, English, STEM fields, and plenty of other academic backgrounds. So if law is somewhere on your radar, I'd much rather have you choose an undergraduate field you're genuinely excited to study while building strong reading, writing, research, analytical reasoning, and communication skills along the way.
You have four years before law school. You're allowed to learn something first.
Not every professional path gives you that much flexibility. Some require specific prerequisites, particular undergraduate preparation, accredited degrees, licensing, clinical hours, portfolios, or a very particular sequence of training.
So if you're considering becoming a physical therapist, occupational therapist, physician assistant, architect, clinical psychologist, veterinarian, dentist, professor, or anything else that requires significant post-college training, don't rely on what you vaguely remember hearing about the pathway. Go investigate the actual pathway.
What degree will you eventually need? Does your bachelor's degree need to be in a particular field, or do you simply need certain prerequisite courses? Will you need research experience, clinical experience, observation hours, or a portfolio? How long does the additional training typically take? And yes, because adulthood continues to be deeply inconvenient, how much is all of this going to cost?
You don't need to map out every semester of the next decade while you're still in high school. But if Future You is potentially signing up for another three, four, six, or eight years of education after college, Present You should probably know that before deciding what makes sense for undergrad.
If you already have a career in mind, one of the smartest things you can do is work backward. Instead of immediately asking, "What should I major in?", start with "What does someone actually need to do to enter this profession?" Then trace the pathway backward until you reach college.
You might discover that there's one very specific undergraduate route. You might discover there are five. You might realize the major you assumed you had to choose isn't required at all. Or you might learn that the career you're excited about requires considerably more schooling than you realized and decide you're still completely on board.
All of those are useful discoveries. The point isn't to scare you away from careers that require graduate or professional school. It's to make sure you're choosing your undergraduate path based on how the system actually works rather than how you assume it works.
Because if you're going to spend four years preparing for the next step, we should probably make sure it's actually the right one.
You can only learn so much about a potential major by reading course descriptions and taking career assessments. Eventually, if a field keeps making your shortlist, I want you to go interact with it in the real world.
Think of it as the academic equivalent of a test drive. You probably wouldn't buy a car because you liked the description on the manufacturer's website, and I'd prefer that you not choose a college major using roughly the same methodology.
The good news is that "trying out" a field doesn't have to mean landing a wildly prestigious internship or spending $8,000 on a summer program with a very impressive university logo at the top of the brochure. Sometimes the most useful exploration is much simpler.
A community college course in something your high school doesn't offer.
Work through an online course, or read a book written by someone in the field.
Start a project and find out whether you like the doing, not just the idea.
A single day watching the real work can tell you a surprising amount.
Somewhere that lets you see the work up close.
Or simply talk to a professor about what research in the field looks like.
Part-time work counts — including the family business.
Find a competition connected to the subject and enter it.
A lecture, a talk, an event where people in the field are thinking out loud.
Nothing here requires a logo, a price tag, or an acceptance letter. Pick whichever version of the subject is realistically available to you.
The goal isn't to collect résumé lines. It's to collect information about yourself.
Let's say you think you're interested in medicine. You could spend months researching pre-med programs and comparing Biology departments, but at some point, it would be useful to find out how you actually feel in a healthcare environment. Do you enjoy interacting with patients? Are you fascinated by the diagnostic process? Does being around illness make you curious about what's happening physiologically, or do you discover that what really interests you is healthcare access, policy, technology, or public health?
All of those reactions tell us something, and they might point toward completely different academic paths.
The same principle applies everywhere. So if you think you might like Engineering, please build something. I don't particularly care whether it's a robot, an Arduino project, a bridge made out of popsicle sticks, or an elaborate contraption designed to stop your cat from knocking things off your desk. The point is to experience some version of designing, testing, failing, troubleshooting, redesigning, and trying again. If you discover that this process makes you want to throw the entire project out a window, that is information. If you look up three hours later and realize you forgot to eat dinner because you were determined to figure it out, that is also information.
Prestige is not the point here.
A selective summer research program can absolutely help you explore an interest. So can shadowing your neighbor who's a physical therapist. So can taking Intro to Biotechnology at your local community college. So can spending a month teaching yourself Blender because you're curious about 3D design. So can helping with the bookkeeping at your family's business and realizing that you're weirdly fascinated by financial systems.
If an experience gives you meaningful exposure to a field and helps you understand whether you want to keep exploring it, it did its job.
And yes, some of these experiences may eventually strengthen your college application too. If you explore an interest deeply enough that it leads to increasingly sophisticated coursework, projects, research, leadership, or community involvement, admissions officers may learn something meaningful about you from that progression.
But I don't want you starting with "What would look impressive?"
Start with "What would help me learn more?"
Ironically, that's often how students end up developing much more interesting extracurricular profiles anyway.
Once you've tried something, don't immediately move on to the next activity. Take a minute and actually think about what you learned.
Did you enjoy the experience itself, or did you mostly enjoy being good at it? Which parts energized you? Which parts bored you? Did something surprise you? Did the experience make you more curious about the field, or did it make you curious about a different field you encountered along the way? What would you want to try next?
And don't underestimate the value of discovering that you don't like something. Students sometimes treat that as though they've wasted their time. You spent six weeks in a summer engineering program and realized you don't want to be an engineer? Fantastic. Do you know how much cheaper it was to learn that now than after three semesters of engineering school?
Major exploration isn't about proving your first idea was correct. Sometimes an experience confirms an interest. Sometimes it complicates one. Sometimes it sends you somewhere else entirely.
All three outcomes are useful.
You're gathering evidence about what you might want to spend four years studying — and one of the easiest ways to gather it is to talk to someone already doing the thing you're considering.
There's another ridiculously useful way to explore a career that requires no application, no tuition, and no six-week summer commitment: talk to someone who actually does it.
I know. Revolutionary.
An informational interview is really just a conversation with someone whose career, field, or educational path you're curious about. You're not interviewing for a job, asking them to hire you, or trying to impress them with everything you've accomplished since seventh grade. You're asking questions because they know something you don't yet, and you'd like to learn from them.
This can be particularly valuable because the version of a career you have in your head may bear only a passing resemblance to what that person actually does all day. "Lawyer" can mean spending your days in a courtroom, but it can also mean reviewing contracts, negotiating corporate transactions, working on environmental policy, advising startups, handling intellectual property, or doing approximately 900 other things that have never appeared on Suits. The same goes for "Doctor" or "Marketing" — each covers a dozen specialties with wildly different days.
Job titles hide a lot of information. People can fill in the blanks.
You probably know more people than you think, especially once you stop limiting "people I know" to the numbers saved in your contacts.
Start with your parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, coaches, neighbors, family friends, employers, and other adults in your life. You're not necessarily asking them to be interviewed. You're asking whether they know someone who works in a field you're interested in.
"I've been exploring architecture and would love to talk to someone who actually works as an architect. Do you happen to know anyone who might be willing to talk with me for 20 minutes?"
…can get you surprisingly far.
You can also look at professional organizations, college alumni networks when they're available to prospective students, university departments, local businesses, nonprofits, and organizations connected to the field. You don't need to track down the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. In fact, someone relatively early in their career may remember the college-to-career transition much more clearly and give you information that's considerably more relevant to where you are now.
And here's the part students tend to underestimate: most adults are pretty happy to help a genuinely curious teenager. Especially when you're asking for advice rather than asking them to magically produce an internship for you.
Please don't schedule a conversation and then open with, "So… tell me about being an engineer." You can do better than that.
Before the conversation, spend 15 minutes learning the basics about what the person does. You don't need to become an expert, but you should know enough that you aren't asking questions Google could've answered in approximately four seconds.
Then focus your questions on the things you can't easily learn from Google:
That last question is especially useful. One informational interview can very easily turn into two or three, and suddenly you've talked to people doing completely different jobs within the same general field.
That's when this exercise starts getting really interesting.
You're obviously listening to the answers to your questions, but I also want you paying attention to the unexpected stuff. Maybe the veterinarian you interview tells you that one of the hardest parts of the job isn't working with animals at all. It's communicating with frightened or grieving owners. Maybe a software engineer tells you they spend far more time collaborating with other people than sitting alone writing code. Maybe a psychologist explains that research and statistics were a much bigger part of their education than they expected.
Those details matter because you're trying to understand the reality of the work, not confirm the version you already imagined.
And your reaction is another piece of evidence. Are you thinking, Wait, tell me more about that? Do you leave with five new things you want to Google — or does one part of it make you realize what actually interests you is something adjacent?
If you talk to an attorney and leave thinking absolutely not, congratulations. We crossed something off the list before you paid law school tuition.
One caveat: one person's experience is one person's experience. Don't interview a miserable accountant and conclude that Accounting is a miserable career. Industries vary. Employers vary. Specialties vary. People vary.
If a field is seriously interesting to you, try talking to more than one person, particularly people doing different types of work within it. Compare what they tell you. Notice where their experiences overlap and where they don't.
You're not looking for someone to hand you the answer to "What should I do with my life?" You're gathering another piece of evidence.
And after you've collected enough of those pieces, you may start noticing something inconvenient: You don't have one interest. You have twelve. Which brings us to the next problem.
Some students come into major exploration because they can't find anything that sounds interesting. Other students have the opposite problem. Everything sounds interesting.
You like Biology, but you're also fascinated by Public Policy. You've been considering Computer Science, except you love Linguistics. Psychology is interesting, but so are Economics, Anthropology, and approximately half the courses you found while you were supposed to be researching Psychology.
First of all, this isn't a problem. Please don't feel like you need to whittle yourself down into one perfectly defined Academic Interest™ just because college applications eventually ask you to put something in the intended-major box.
In fact, if your interests keep crossing traditional academic boundaries, that tells us something useful about how you think. Maybe you're less interested in one subject than you are in a particular question that requires several subjects to answer.
A student interested in healthcare disparities might need Biology to understand the medicine, Sociology or Anthropology to understand the people and communities affected, Economics to understand incentives and resource allocation, and Public Policy to understand the systems surrounding all of it.
That's not indecision. That's an interdisciplinary question. And colleges have built all kinds of ways for students to pursue them.
Depth in one field, a structured second interest alongside it.
Two full sets of requirements — easier when they overlap, harder when both are highly structured.
A smaller focused cluster of courses when a whole minor isn't warranted.
Offered at some colleges when nothing existing fits the question you're asking.
These are illustrations, not equations. The same pair of interests can lead to several different fields, and what's available depends entirely on the college.
Before you start plotting an elaborate triple major that will require you to remain enrolled until age 27, check whether somebody has already invented the thing you're looking for.
Entire academic fields exist to combine disciplines — Cognitive Science, Philosophy, Politics & Economics, Science, Technology & Society, and plenty more, depending on the college.
Which is another reason not to limit your exploration to subjects you met in high school. The combination you're trying to build may already have a name. You just haven't learned it yet.
And if the perfect interdisciplinary major doesn't exist, the structures above give you plenty of ways to assemble one.
But before you start mentally collecting majors like infinity stones, remember the 120-credit degree. Those requirements have to fit somewhere. Two majors that overlap can be manageable; two highly structured ones with long prerequisite sequences involve considerably more scheduling gymnastics.
And more isn't automatically better. You don't get bonus admissions points, career points, or general life points because your diploma needs two lines. Sometimes a thoughtful handful of electives in the second interest gives you exactly what you wanted.
So "I like two things" does not require choosing one and dramatically saying goodbye to the other. But there's a catch: some colleges make this kind of exploration far easier than others.
Wandering across academic departments is practically encouraged. You can take courses across disciplines, add minors fairly easily, and build an academic program that looks like it was designed specifically for your particular collection of interests.
Crossing academic boundaries can involve prerequisites, enrollment restrictions, separate undergraduate schools, internal applications, or scheduling requirements that make certain combinations much harder than they initially appear.
Combining Economics and Computer Science is simple when both live in the same undergraduate college — and a matter of internal transfers and increasingly concerned academic advisors when one of them sits in Engineering.
This is why academic flexibility can become a major factor in college fit.
If you already know you want a highly specialized program with a clear professional pathway, fantastic. We can look for colleges that do that exceptionally well.
But if you're the student who keeps saying, "I don't want to give up X just because I'm interested in Y," I'm going to pay attention to something different when we build your college list.
How much academic freedom will you actually have?
Can you take courses across departments? Combine majors and minors reasonably easily? Explore interdisciplinary programs? Change direction if one interest eventually wins out over another?
Those questions may matter much more to your college experience than whether a school happens to offer the exact major you're currently considering.
Because if you're interested in twelve different things right now, I have some news for you: college will probably introduce you to a thirteenth.
You don't necessarily need a college that forces you into one academic box. You may need one that gives you enough structure to develop real depth and enough flexibility to keep exploring everything around it.
You've reflected. You've researched. You've looked at actual curricula, tried some things, talked to people, and investigated careers. Maybe you've narrowed the possibilities from 47 to seven, which is technically progress, but you still don't have a clear winner.
That's okay. You may not need one yet.
At many colleges, students don't formally declare a major until sometime during their first or second year. Depending on the university, you might apply as undecided or undeclared, apply to a broader undergraduate school without committing to a specific major, or indicate an intended major on your application that isn't actually binding once you enroll.
And honestly? For a student who's genuinely still exploring, that can be an excellent thing. College is going to introduce you to fields you probably haven't encountered in high school, taught by people who've devoted their careers to studying them. You may walk into an Anthropology class because it satisfies a distribution requirement and emerge wondering where Anthropology has been all your life. Or discover Linguistics, Urban Studies, or Cognitive Science — fields that never appeared on your high school transcript.
You're allowed to use college to figure some of this out. That's one reason you're going.
But before you check the UNDECIDED box assuming you've bought two years of free wandering through the course catalog, we need to talk about what "undecided" actually means at the colleges you're considering.
Applying undecided might mean exactly what you're imagining: you enter a broad undergraduate college, spend some time exploring different subjects, and declare your major once you've figured out what you want.
Students may apply directly to separate undergraduate schools such as Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Business, Nursing, or Architecture. You might have flexibility to explore majors within your school but much less flexibility to move between schools.
Certain majors may be direct-admit, capacity-constrained, impacted, capped, restricted, or otherwise subject to rules that essentially translate to: "You probably should've told us you wanted this when you applied."
This matters a lot if one of the majors you're possibly considering falls into that category.
Let's say you aren't sure what you want to study, but Computer Science is somewhere on your list. You also like Economics, Psychology, and Data Science, so applying undecided feels like the perfect solution. You'll arrive, take some classes, and figure it out later.
Maybe!
But before we make that plan, we're checking the internal transfer policy for Computer Science.
Exploring is the plan, and the plan works.
Worth knowing the rules before you count on it.
Neither column is the wrong answer. Being undecided isn't a mistake — it just means we check which column a college puts you in.
The same goes for Engineering, Business, Nursing, Architecture, and other high-demand programs. At certain schools, internal transfer is so competitive that I would absolutely not recommend enrolling on the assumption that you'll simply switch in later.
This doesn't mean you can't apply undecided if one of those fields interests you. It means we need to know the rules before we decide whether being undecided actually gives you flexibility or quietly closes a door you wanted to keep open.
There's an important distinction between being undecided because you're thoughtfully exploring several possibilities and being undecided because you've avoided thinking about academics entirely.
The first is completely reasonable. The second is… less ideal.
You don't need to arrive with a laminated 10-year career plan, but I do want you developing some sense of what you're curious about. Maybe you don't know whether you'll choose Sociology, Anthropology, or Political Science, but you've realized you're fascinated by how people behave within social systems.
That's very different from "I don't know. Whatever."
And it gives us something useful when we're researching colleges. If you know you're choosing among several possible directions, we can look for schools that are strong across those areas and make it relatively easy to explore among them.
If you're still exploring, this changes what I'm looking for in a college. Instead of focusing primarily on the strength of one department, I want to know whether the school gives you room to move among several possibilities.
You don't need a school with one perfect department. You need a school where several possible versions of your future could work.
And that's why "undecided" doesn't mean academics stop mattering when we build your college list. In some ways, they matter even more.
There's just one more wrinkle we need to deal with. Because eventually, even if a college tells you that your intended major isn't binding, the application may still ask you to choose one.
And then every student asks me the same question: "Okay… but does the major I put down affect my chances of getting in?"
Ah, yes. The question you knew was coming. After all this thoughtful exploration, curriculum research, and consideration of what you might actually want to study, you'd now like to know: Which one gives me the best chance of getting in?
I knew we'd end up here eventually.
The frustrating answer is that your intended major can affect your chances of admission, but how much it matters depends entirely on the college and how that college structures its admissions process. Before we can talk strategy, we need to understand what you're actually being admitted to.
Depending on the college, you may be admitted to the institution as a whole, to a specific undergraduate school, or directly into a particular major — which is where terms like direct admission, impacted major, capped major, and capacity-constrained program start showing up.
Which is why I never want you looking at a university's overall acceptance rate and assuming it tells you what you need to know.
If a university admits 40% of its applicants overall but the program you want is significantly more competitive, that 40% isn't necessarily your 40%.
You're admitted to the institution as a whole. Your intended major helps them understand you, but you aren't competing for seats in a department.
Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Business, Nursing, Architecture — each with its own expectations and potentially its own selectivity.
Direct admission, impacted, capped, restricted, capacity-constrained — you're admitted into the program itself.
Same question, three different structures — which is why "does my major affect admission?" has to be answered college by college.
Certain fields attract enormous demand and have very real limits on how many students a university can accommodate — faculty and course capacity for Computer Science, labs for Engineering, clinical placements for Nursing, studio space for Architecture, a finite number of seats in a business school.
So yes, at some colleges, applying to one of those programs is substantially more competitive than applying elsewhere within the same university.
But I want to put approximately seventeen asterisks around "at some colleges." You cannot take a list of the "10 hardest majors to get into" from the internet and apply it indiscriminately to every university in America. A field that's direct-admit at one school might not even be considered during admission at another. One university may publish admit rates by school or major. Another may explicitly say it doesn't admit by major. A third may make its internal process about as transparent as the recipe for Coca-Cola.
We research the actual college. We do not build admissions strategy from TikTok statistics.
And here we arrive at one of the most beloved admissions "hacks" on the internet.
Let's say you want Computer Science, but you've heard it's incredibly competitive. Then somebody online tells you that Philosophy has a higher acceptance rate. Brilliant! You'll apply to Philosophy, get admitted, arrive on campus, and switch into Computer Science.
You have defeated college admissions. Except… maybe not.
Remember our internal transfer conversation? If a major is hard to enter as a first-year applicant, there's a decent chance the university also anticipated thousands of students trying to enter later.
Never enroll at a college assuming you'll be able to transfer into a restricted major unless you've researched the policy and would still be happy attending if the transfer never happens.
That last part matters.
If you'd be miserable at University X unless you eventually get into its Business school, and admission to that Business school after enrollment isn't guaranteed, then University X may not actually be a viable option for you.
And even when switching later is technically possible, applying to a field you have no interest in creates another problem: your application has to make sense.
Suppose you've taken the most advanced math and computer science courses available to you, spent three years competing in robotics, built an app, completed a summer coding program, and worked on a machine-learning project. Then your application arrives announcing that your primary academic interest is… Classics.
Could you genuinely have discovered a passion for Classics? Absolutely. Human beings contain multitudes.
But if you're choosing it only because fewer people apply and nothing else in your application explains the interest, you haven't found a loophole. You've created a confusing application.
This doesn't mean every extracurricular activity needs to perfectly match your intended major. Please don't turn yourself into a walking LinkedIn profile at age 16. Students can play soccer, paint, work at an ice cream shop, volunteer at an animal shelter, and still want to study Physics.
What we're looking for is coherence, not cosplay.
If you're telling a college that you're excited to study something, particularly when they ask you to explain why, it helps if your application gives us some reason to believe you.
Not necessarily — this is where students overcorrect. Your intended major should reflect where your curiosity has led you now, not whichever subject appears most often in your activities list.
Maybe you started a business and discovered the part you actually loved was analyzing consumer behavior, which has pushed you toward Psychology or Economics.
That's called developing an interest, and colleges are generally aware that teenagers are capable of doing it.
The question isn't whether your résumé and major match perfectly. It's whether your academic direction feels credible and thoughtfully explored.
A little. But it shouldn't create your major choice.
If you're genuinely deciding between several fields you would be happy studying, admissions considerations can absolutely become part of our strategy. We might investigate whether one program admits directly while another doesn't, whether switching later would be difficult, whether a university has different application requirements for different undergraduate schools, or whether one academic path better reflects the preparation you've already built.
That's smart application planning.
What I don't want is for you to identify the subject you're genuinely excited about, abandon it solely because you think another major has a better acceptance rate, and then spend four years trying to claw your way back into the program you wanted in the first place.
Your goal isn't just to get into college. Your goal is to get into a college where you can actually study what you want to study.
Sometimes major choice affects the admissions strategy we use to get there. That's why we're going to research it carefully.
But the strategy should serve the goal. It shouldn't become the goal.
So far, we've mostly talked about choosing a major as though it's something Future College You needs to worry about. But once you start developing a clearer academic direction, that information can actually become pretty useful before you ever submit a college application.
It can guide the classes you take, the opportunities you pursue, how you spend your summers, and eventually the colleges that make sense for your list. It can also make your application stronger — not because admissions officers expect a 16-year-old to have spent childhood preparing for one field, but because genuine interests tend to leave footprints.
If you've been curious about something for a while, there's a decent chance you've already followed that curiosity somewhere — a harder class, a project, a job, or just increasingly sophisticated questions about the subject.
That's what we're looking for. Not:
"How can I manufacture the perfect résumé for a Neuroscience applicant?"
More like:
"If I'm genuinely interested in Neuroscience, what could I do next to understand it better?"
Let's start with your transcript.
If you're developing a serious interest in a particular academic field, your course selection should generally demonstrate that you're preparing yourself to study it at the college level. That doesn't mean every class needs to relate directly to your major, and it definitely doesn't mean you should turn your schedule into some bizarre exercise in personal branding. You're still a high school student. You need English. You need history. You should probably continue being a person with more than one interest.
But academic preparation matters, particularly for majors with substantial prerequisite knowledge.
If you're considering Engineering and your school offers Calculus and Physics, I'll want to see you challenge yourself in Calculus and Physics. A future English major should be taking rigorous courses that build sophisticated reading and writing. And someone interested in Economics should know that college Economics is often far more quantitative than the high school version, and plan their math accordingly.
Notice that I'm saying "the strongest relevant courses available to you," not handing every student the exact same checklist. Colleges evaluate your curriculum in the context of what your school actually offers. You cannot take AP Physics C if AP Physics C doesn't exist at your high school, and I haven't yet discovered a successful method for manifesting AP classes through sheer force of will.
What I don't love is when the opportunity exists, clearly connects to the field a student says they want to study, and the student deliberately avoids it because they think it might hurt their GPA.
If you're telling a highly selective Engineering program that Engineering is your great academic passion while also telling me, "Oh, I didn't take Physics because I heard it was really hard," you have created a slightly awkward situation for all of us.
Your extracurriculars can be another fantastic way to investigate an academic interest, but this is also where students start getting a little… admissions-y.
They discover that they might want to study medicine and suddenly feel compelled to join every health-related club within a 30-mile radius. Future Business majors start founding nonprofits with suspiciously corporate organizational charts. Prospective Computer Science students begin collecting hackathons like Pokémon.
You do not need to cosplay your intended major.
I'd much rather see you use that time to genuinely explore it. Maybe your interest in Environmental Science leads you to a local conservation problem and eventually a project around it. Maybe Computer Science leads you to build a tool that solves something that's been annoying you for six months.
Sometimes your interests connect to formal activities. Sometimes they show up in hobbies, projects, jobs, family responsibilities, or the rabbit holes you disappear down in your free time — and sometimes an activity that had nothing to do with your intended major is the thing that leads you there.
The point isn't to make every line of your activities list say FUTURE ECONOMIST in blinking neon letters. The point is to give yourself opportunities to learn whether the things you think you're interested in hold up when you actually do something with them.
Summer can be a particularly good time to explore an academic field because you suddenly have something that's in very short supply during the school year: time.
You might take a college course, join a program, do research, intern, shadow someone, work, volunteer, or build something of your own.
But before you conclude that you now need a $12,000 pre-college program at a famous university to prove your commitment to Political Science, please remain calm.
The value of a summer experience isn't determined by the logo on the sweatshirt.
A community college course can provide meaningful exploration. So can a job, an independent project, or volunteering with an organization doing work you care about. The right choice depends on what you're trying to learn and what's realistically available to you.
Remember: we're following curiosity, not purchasing prestige.
Once you've narrowed your academic interests, your college research should get more sophisticated too.
Please don't tell me a college is "really good for Biology" because Google ranked it #14. We're going deeper.
What does the curriculum actually look like? Are there concentrations that match your interests? What are faculty members researching? How accessible is undergraduate research? Are there specialized labs, institutes, centers, clinics, field stations, archives, performance spaces, or other resources that matter for your field? Can you combine the major with your other interests? What do students actually do within the program?
And if you're still deciding among several majors, that's useful information too. We can look for colleges where all of those possibilities remain viable and where moving among them won't require an administrative miracle.
This is where major exploration starts becoming college-fit research. You're no longer asking only, "Is this a good college?" You're asking the much more useful question: "Is this a good college for what I might actually want to do there?"
Then we arrive at senior year, when colleges take all this lovely exploration and ask you to explain it in approximately 150 words. Because of course they do.
"Why this major?" is an extremely common supplemental essay question, even when colleges phrase it in seventeen different ways — your academic interests, why this undergraduate school, what you hope to study, how you'll pursue it on their campus.
Suddenly, all that exploration we've been doing becomes very useful.
The student who decided three weeks ago that Finance sounded impressive is going to have a much harder time writing something substantive than the student who can explain how an interest developed, what they've done to explore it, what questions they're now curious about, and why they want to keep pursuing those questions in college.
That doesn't mean one perfectly linear story beginning with the chemistry set you received on your fifth birthday and ending with your inevitable Nobel Prize. Please don't reverse-engineer your childhood. Real interests are messier than that.
Maybe one class sparked something. Then an activity complicated it. Then a summer experience exposed you to a different part of the field. Then you read something that sent you in another direction. That's not a weak story. That's intellectual development.
And by the time you sit down to write about your academic interests, I don't need you to know exactly what job you'll have at 35. I want you to be able to tell me something much more believable:
Here's what I'm curious about. Here's what I've done to explore it. Here's what I've learned along the way. And here's what I want to explore next.
If you've been doing the work throughout this guide, you won't have to invent that story when application season arrives. You'll already have one.
Okay. We've covered a lot.
You now know that your intended major isn't a blood oath, your high school course catalog represents approximately 4% of the academic universe, liking Grey's Anatomy isn't sufficient evidence that you should become a doctor, and applying to Philosophy because TikTok told you it's easier to get into than Computer Science is not the admissions master plan you thought it was.
So what are you actually supposed to do with all of this?
Major exploration isn't something you complete once. It's a process you'll circle through several times as you learn more about different fields and, more importantly, about yourself.
Here's the basic game plan.
Generate possibilities before you start eliminating them.
Use what you've learned about your interests, strengths, and favorite kinds of problems to identify roughly 5–10 academic directions worth investigating. Assessments help here too, but remember: they're idea generators, not magical sorting hats.
At this stage, weird discoveries are welcome. If you'd never heard of Human-Computer Interaction or Medical Anthropology until today, excellent. That's exactly why we're exploring.
Now find out whether you like the actual field or merely the description of it.
Pick your most promising possibilities and read the actual curriculum at two or three colleges — required courses, electives, department research, and where graduates end up (and whether that requires another degree).
Some options will get more interesting the deeper you go. Others will produce a resounding "Oh. Never mind." Both outcomes are useful.
For the possibilities that survive, go interact with them.
Take a class. Build something. Shadow someone. Get a job. Talk to somebody working in the field. Find whatever version of the subject is realistically accessible to you and see what happens when it stops being theoretical.
You don't need to turn every academic interest into an extracurricular strategy. You're simply trying to learn something Google can't tell you: Do I actually enjoy doing this?
Once you've explored a few possibilities, look for patterns.
Which subjects keep pulling you back? Which experiences made you more curious? Which majors sounded exciting until you saw the required coursework? What kind of work do you seem to enjoy doing over and over again?
You may discover that several seemingly different interests are actually connected by the same underlying question. "I like Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and Public Health" might eventually become:
"I'm fascinated by how social environments influence human health and behavior." Now we're getting somewhere.
Eventually, particularly as we approach college-list building and applications, we'll need a clearer direction.
Maybe you have one obvious front-runner. Maybe you're choosing between two related fields. Maybe you need a college where you can combine several interests. Or maybe you still don't know the exact major, but you've identified the academic neighborhood you want the freedom to explore. That's enough.
You're not trying to discover your destiny. You're trying to identify the direction that makes the most sense based on what you know about yourself right now.
And finally: you're allowed to change your mind.
In fact, changing your mind because you've learned something new is a sign that this process is working.
Maybe your interests within the major evolve. Or you get to college, take one random course to fulfill a requirement, and suddenly we're having a completely different conversation.

Explore → Investigate → Experience → Compare → Narrow → Reassess ↻
And then you loop back around whenever you need to. The goal isn't certainty. It's knowing enough to choose a good next direction.
After all of this research, you may still find yourself staring at two or three options and wondering which one is the right choice.
Here's the mildly annoying answer: there may not be one.
There could be several majors you'd genuinely enjoy, several ways to combine your interests, and several different paths that could eventually lead you toward work you find meaningful. You're not trying to uncover the one correct answer hidden somewhere in the course catalog. You're trying to make the best decision you can with the information you have right now.
That's why I care much more about the process than whether you can confidently announce a major by the end of this guide. If you've investigated the coursework, tested your interests, thought about careers, talked to people, and paid attention to what keeps pulling you back, you're in a much better position than someone who picked "Business" three years ago and has never questioned it because it seemed practical.
And once you do choose a direction, go explore the heck out of it. Take the harder class. Follow the weird rabbit hole. Try the project. Talk to the professor. Apply for the opportunity. Read the thing nobody assigned you. Let one question lead to another.
Because ultimately, the name you put in the Intended Major box matters a lot less than what you actually do with your curiosity once you've found something worth following.
And if that curiosity eventually leads you somewhere else?
